Owner of Crossing Trading Co., Harlan is heir to a vast family fortune, and a thriving merchant and trading business. While most of his business happens offshore or in port at Port Townsend, Barust, Harlan resides with his twin children, Swayy and Winsor, in Gypet. Harlan despises magic and lives in Gypet by choice, as it is the only “magicless” district in Egeni.

King Maden is rumored to be a practicing Demeni who is hunting down and killing Illumini throughout the realm. He commands the Egeni Army as well as a horde of soldiers called Shadowmen, of whom have an unknown origin. Maden resides in the palace in Sed Emporia.

Vidar's spirited sister and a fierce Risi warrior with a memorable sense of humor. She becomes one of Swayy's closest female allies and eventually takes on a significant leadership role within the mountains following the violent upheaval surrounding Agastya's rule.

A Risi clansman (and Faolan’s brother) who initially appears hostile and distrustful toward Swayy. Intelligent, restrained, and fiercely protective of his sister Faolan, Vidar gradually becomes one of Swayy's most important and complicated relationships as they navigate working with one another for the greater good of the realm (Swayy is still taller, a fact she will not let him forget.)

An older, powerful clan leader haunted by his role in Quirina's banishment, Agastya grants the group sanctuary while trying to prevent the Gress brothers from disrupting the succession contest known as The Feat.

A large, red-haired Risi clansman whose crude behavior and early treatment of Swayy immediately make him an antagonist in her life. Arrogant, provocative, and often reckless, Ian repeatedly clashes with Swayy and others over his obsession with her.

Age: 20’s.A hostile and argumentative member of Morgan's resistance circle. Impatient with uncertainty and skeptical about relying on Swayy, he creates internal conflict within the group and ultimately becomes part of Morgan's dangerous larger strategy.

Age: Unknown.A member of Morgan's underground circle in Port Townsend who is involved in discussions about the twins, the war, and Swayy's future. He is one of the conspirators helping Morgan continue the plans set in motion before Harlan's death.

A bespectacled, hunched man who works as the royal printmaster for the district and secretly belongs to Morgan's circle. Known to Morgan as an unreliable narrator and habitual liar, Fred nevertheless possesses useful knowledge and connections that make him valuable to the rebellion.
